For serious storage in the garage, use 55 gallon water storage barrels. They will be heavy, so fill them in place using a drinking water hose and empty some water out any time with a reliable pump. 

Add a few drops of bleach to keep storage water fresh

6 drops of unscented liquid household bleach per gallon of water is more than ample for regular municipal water. Double that for untreated water.
For a 3 gallon bottle, that’s 18 drops (1 mL) of bleach. For a 55 gallon barrel, that’s a lot of drops or 3.3 teaspoons (16 mL) of bleach.
Dropper bottles make measurements easy.
